Role Reversal?

Since the end of World War II, Notwithstanding the cold war with Russia, the US has been understood to be the leader of the world. Changes, really not-so-subtle, may well be occurring. In the far east, after the US withdrawal from the transpacific agreement the other nations have preceded without us. There has been an increasing perception that" America First "may really mean America alone in an arrogant and selfish fashion.

Lately Donald Trump has been his usual bufoonish self. He has hung Nikki Haley out to dry, pretty much cut off Gen. Kelly of the knees, refused to listen to Gen. Mattis and continues to support incompetent and duplicitous cabinet members and nominees for those posts. He also continues to either exaggerate or out right lie about his accomplishments.

Into town this week rode Pres. Macron of France. This man prepares. He began by appearing on FOXNews, Donnie's favorite network and in a series of events wooed Donnie with flattery and camaraderie. Then today he made a speech before a joint session of Congress. It was masterful, gently chiding the position of the United States and particularly Donnie on such things as the Paris Accord, The Iran deal, the inevitability of globalization and the need for multinational approaches to the challenges of globalization, International trade and terrorism. The speech was generally well received although it was clear that the Republicans were uncomfortable with much of it, as evidenced by their failure to applaud at some obvious times.

All in all it is clear that Macron has adopted a kind of avuncular attitude towards Trump and  is attempting to gently instruct him and change his views. Of course, if Donnie ever figures this out hewill be livid. Luckily, he does not seem to be a quick learner and still is basking in the glow of the pomp and circumstance of the last few days. It also seems that  Macron is more than willing to take over the role as the leader of the Western world. Donnie undoubtedly still believes he occupies that position but he has clearly disqualified himself for the time being. Angela Merkel appears tired and has more than enough on her plate at home. The United Kingdom is in political turmoil and really has no one to offer up. Macron has plenty on his plate at home but it appears poised both intellectually and energetically ready to be a or the world leader. Coming off his performance of the last few days I hope he perseveres.
